How Much Do Tutors Charge? Tutoring Prices Explained
Updated Oct 23, 2026 · 8 min read
If you've asked three tutors for a price this week, you probably got three very different answers. That's normal. How much tutors charge depends on the level, the subject, the tutor's experience and where you live. In the US, most private tutors charge $25 to $85 an hour. In the UK the average is close to £37. In Spain it's often under €20. This guide explains where those numbers come from and how to judge the quote in front of you.
Average tutoring rates by country
Here are typical prices for one-to-one lessons with an independent tutor, in local currency. Click a country for prices by level and the sources behind them.
| Country | Primary school | High school | Charged |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $25 – $55 | $40 – $85 | per hour |
| United Kingdom | £20 – £40 | £35 – £70 | per hour |
| Canada | CA$30 – CA$50 | CA$40 – CA$80 | per hour |
| Australia | A$40 – A$70 | A$80 – A$180 | per hour |
| France | €15 – €25 | €25 – €45 | per hour |
| Spain | €10 – €18 | €17 – €25 | per hour |
| Morocco | MAD 60 – MAD 150 | MAD 120 – MAD 350 | per hour |
| United Arab Emirates | AED 100 – AED 200 | AED 150 – AED 300 | per hour |
| Saudi Arabia | SAR 70 – SAR 110 | SAR 130 – SAR 160 | per lesson |
| Egypt | EGP 200 – EGP 300 | EGP 400 – EGP 600 | per lesson |
Agencies and tutoring centers usually cost 20 to 50 percent more than an independent tutor with the same experience. Part of that pays for checking tutors, finding replacements and handling the admin.
What changes the price
Five things explain most of the gap between a cheap quote and an expensive one:
- Level. Primary school help is the cheapest. Exam years (GCSE and A-level, the bac, SAT prep, Thanaweya Amma) cost the most.
- Subject. Senior math, physics and chemistry cost more than reading or homework help, because fewer tutors teach them well.
- Experience. A university student might charge half what a certified teacher charges. A tutor who has marked national exams charges more again.
- Format. Online lessons are often 10 to 20 percent cheaper because the tutor doesn't travel.
- City. Big cities cost more. London tutors charge about 15 to 25 percent above the UK average, and New York math tutors charge more than those in Ohio.
What private tutoring costs over a school year
The hourly rate is only half the picture. The real cost of private tutoring is the rate times the number of lessons. One lesson a week at $50, over a 36-week school year, comes to $1,800. Two lessons a week before an exam, for ten weeks, at $70, is $1,400.
Before you commit, agree on a goal and a check-in date with the tutor. 'Move from a C to a B in algebra by the end of term' is easier to judge than 'help with math'.
Five questions to judge a quote
A higher price is fine when you can see what it pays for. Ask these before you book:
- How long is a lesson? Some tutors price 45 minutes, others 90.
- Is there a package price for 5 or 10 lessons?
- What happens if we cancel or the student is sick?
- How will I know how my child is doing? Notes after each lesson are a good sign.
- Can we do a trial lesson or a short free call first?

Common questions
How much does a tutor cost per hour on average?
In the US, about $40 to $60 an hour for school subjects. In the UK, about £35 to £40. In Canada, C$40 to C$65 for an experienced tutor. Prices in Spain, Morocco and Egypt are much lower in euros or dollars.
Why are tutors so expensive?
A tutor's hourly rate also pays for preparation, travel, messages with parents and the weeks when students cancel. Most independent tutors teach far fewer paid hours than a full-time job.
Is online tutoring cheaper?
Usually by 10 to 20 percent with the same tutor. Online also gives you more tutors to choose from, which can bring prices down outside big cities.
Are tutoring packages worth it?
Yes, if you already know the tutor is a good fit. Start with one or two lessons, then buy a package for the discount.
